Conservatism made a lot of sense in the latter half of the 20th century. America was on top of the world, economically and militarily. The middle class was powerful, even single-income households could reasonably support a family. There were recessions and downturns in the economy, of course, but ultimately they would not be enough to bring families into poverty. So the idea of simply lowering taxes and opening up trade as an economic plan was enticing to a lot of people. We're doing well, so let's take advantage of it.
Well, they did take advantage of it. Time and time again, with various trade deals and tax cuts, and for a while it seemed to be working. But at one point the working class of this country has woken up to the fact that their wages haven't truly risen for DECADES and that every news report they see about a growing middle-class in China is simply evidence that opportunity that once belonged to them has moved elsewhere.
Conservatism, as an ideology, is built for nations that are at their peak, because it's easy to support the status-quo when a nation is at it's most powerful point in history. But after decades abuse we can't simply say "less government will solve our problems". That's not to say that more government power is the answer, just that conservatism alone is not the answer to our nation's problems.
