Why would he say this when America already has the strongest military on the planet?

Our troops are stretched out all over the world when they dont need to be.

They would probably run out of ordnance before china runs out of cannon fodder
>>67722012
Because to Americans spending more on the military than the rest of the world combined is considered weak.
>>67722012
Because the military is being used in stupid ways, the people in it aren't brave civilians trying to defend their country, they're savvy people looking for free education. Also they're putting millions into this anti rape campaign when there's women in the navy getting their chiefs fired for holding them accountable.
>>67722012
The airforce got gutted but then they expect us to produce just as much airpower as before. Its retarded and unsustainable
>>67722012
The average American is dumb and "muh military" is a.buzzword that had been instilled into his head from an early age, so he responds positively to it.
Obama has made significant cuts to the military. Our fleet has been diminished to 272 active ships, Army personnel has been downsized considerably Obama has scaled down our nuclear arsenal, etc.
Whether or not you agree with expanding these features back to pre-Obama levels or beyond, he did significantly downsize the military.
>>67722012
Because that's what Republican primary voters want to hear.
He's just being consistent with the rest of his campaign thus far.
>>67722187
You never once thought it could be more efficient? Because that's what he's saying.
It has efficiency and modernization issues across the board. All branches have long been stuck in a cold war way of thinking that ultimately have proven to be somewhat inflexible. As for efficiency, it sufferers from the same bureaucratic bloat the government exhibits.
It is by far the strongest, but there is much room for improvement.
Under budget
Ahead of schedule
>>67722012
Lots of our equipment is outdated, including our infantry weapons, light vehicles, artillery pieces, etc. Many procurement failures have cost the US lots of money like the XM8, XM25, XM307, and F35.

>>67722374
we bought a great pile of scrap metal. but planes bought for the sake of keeping 2 plane companies busy dont defend america
they literally have recycled planes that have never been used many times. tomahawks cost millions even today. technology cost less over time but the military has been paying new prices on everything
a tomahawk shouldnt even cost 1 mil per unit today. more than a 20 year old guidance system and a frame that hasnt even been revised. microprocessors from 20 years ago dont even cost $20 now
they paid for a rail gun to be put on ships but subs can sink them no worries. radar stealth is defeated by doubling up radar stations. and murica doesnt have enough man power

Yes, but not anywhere near the numbers needed to be a worthwhile project.
>That wasn't a big program.
It was a fucking stupid one and every dollar into it was wasted on a sub-par rifle that performed worse than the M4.

>muh world police!
Every NATO member would be vulnerable without us, so until they decide to pull their own weight we've got to have adequate reserves of manpower and equipment.
>If there is ever a threat on US soil you can come back to me.
Yeah, because we'd wait to be invaded before having the things we need to protect ourselves. Great idea.
By the way, your kumbaya candidate Bernie authorized the allocation of several billion dollars in overseas military operations funding in the 2000s. You won't hear about that though.

Right now they spend thousands of dollars on a single screw
>>67723642
>implying it's not obvious I'm an isolationist libertarian
>>67723125
They are paying those prices because the military industrial complex is a bubble economy which is floating pretty much the entire east coast, a good chunk of the south, and a reasonable amount of California and. The moment they stop pumping federal money in it that bubble will burst and drag the whole country down with it like the housing crisis times 15 and since our dollar is the global reserve currency it will ripple across the entire global economy.
You have no idea how many jobs are provided by the military, military contractors, sub contractors, and logistics agencies that coordinate between them. They are stalling for time until either a major war breaks out or China collapses because those are the only ways out of this hole.
>>67722012
This is one of the only things I'm worried about regarding him. Rome's decline started due to special attention for the military and them getting spoiled as a result
Granted, the military which started the snowball of revolts was spoiled rotten and wasn't worth a shit, and was a private police force for the emperor... but still there is a slight similarity
>>67722012
The american military is the closest thing there is to a global empire. When our strength wanes, the strength of others comes to fill in the void.

Disagree. When it comes to military we have invented much more than just free market enterprise has been able to do. DARPA has been incredible for all of society however you want to look at it.
Say what you will but the Nazis had a fighter pilot that was 40 years ahead of its time once the allies occupied it. The Germans had the best weapons and tanks for a reason.

>>67723642

>>67722187
All branches took huge hits after OIF drawdown. You have to remember that it was one of the few times in US history where all reserves including the national guard were activated. Lots of units had their deployments doubled.
Retention for experienced servicemen just completely fucking tanked, and not enough people are replacing the old as fuck old guard. All branches are also overrun with affirmative action and bureaucratic nonsense. Most units are unable to administer extended operations, they have no soul or drive.
>>67726291
Do you get to fiddle lolis?
I always take it to mean he wants to FIX the military
The military gets suckered into buying shit it doesn't need all the fucking time, trump wants to shave those shitty things off the budget and make it stronger
>>67722187
Same here. Hopefully he means to:
1.) Give more power to the military brass with regards to strategy.
2.) Clean up the military industrial complex, bidding process, etc.
I mean, its THE CURRENT YEAR, military is about efficiency, size doesn't matter as much.
If I hear one politician say "our Air Force is the smallest it has been since pre-WW2" I'm gunna lose it. Such a dumb statement.

I have never assumed they meant "we need to increase our entrance and training standards." Because I don't think those problems are clear to people on the outside.

>>67722012
He's going to scrap the Geneva convention. No more ROE.
>>67727496
This is true, the bidding process is SHIT. We had a project with a budget of $800,000 to basically build an air conditioned 2500sqft warehouse. The contractor that won the bid came in at $799,999 and built it smaller than was desired.
I've never heard anything good about the contracting system.
Our military can't even pick a new fucking handgun.
http://www.thefirearmblog.com/blog/2016/03/11/army-chief-milley-criticizes-mhs-red-tape-wants-power-select-new-pistol/
He said we need to do it for cheaper as well. Essentially what he means is, no more shitty contracts that favor corporate interests and financial affairs over equipment that the US military actually needs, according to the generals and higher ranked. For example, the F-35, useless and insanely expensive, costing almost 2 trillion dollars, was not wanted but built anyways. Funny, considering one of the many people who wanted it to be funded was Bernie Sanders, because it "created jobs in my state of vermont", very selfish and near sighted decision.
>>67727792
On the other hand much of the US population is armed, they aren't military but our civilians aren't truly non combatants either.
It's only something that would ever come into play if there were ground forces on US soil obviously but still worth keeping in mind.

That allows faggots and trannys in
That allows woman to have lower standards then men.
New recruits have classes before they enter training that teach them exactly what drill sergeants can and can’t do: They can’t harm them physically. They can’t yell at them. They can’t smoke them until the new soldiers can’t move.
Lower standards lower discipline

Rebuilding our military means getting back good generals and re-establishing a chain of command that strengthens the insitution, he's not referring to building new planes or ships or anything.
