The primaries are to gauge the public's interest in candidates, because the party, typically, does not want to put someone who won't gain any votes. A person representing their party is likely to build an administration using key figures in said party. Ignoring who their voters want can cost them the election and some serious career advancement, and might even cause full scale riots, which is something I expect to happen when Bernie is denied the nomination, even if he doesn't get the delegates. Clinton supporters too, if she loses the general election to, say, Trump. Now whether or not the GOP will be petty and tell Trump to fuck off, even though he has so much support and may very well be a shoe-in regardless of which demo he faces, only time will tell.

There are no super delegates in the GOP. Delegates are bound by law to vote for whoever won their state, which is Trump is most cases.
