There have certainly been worse genocides in terms of bodycount, but I think the thing that makes Hitler and the Holocaust so bad is the industrialisation. Herding truckloads of people into the woods, shooting them and dumping the bodies in a mass grave is brutal and horrific, but shipping trainloads of people to large camps, working them to near death and then gassing and cremating them speaks of a cold and calculated inhumanity.
It wasn't just a group of barbarians caught up in religious/nationalist rhetoric, or a megalomaniac conquering new lands and conveniently disposing of the previous occupants. It was a state-of-the-art logistical system whose sole purpose was to kill swathes of 'undesirable' people. It can't be chalked up to blind rage or lack of education. It shows us what people are capable of, in spite of apparent enlightenment.
