What are /pol/s thoughts on Universal Basic Income?
i.e. giving everyone free money
One of the arguments for it seems to be that many jobs will be replaced by machines in the next 10-20 years so many people will be unemployed.
What do you think?
it'd be cheaper to kill them desu senpai
>>67665549
There's no such thing as free money.
When you take money from productive people and give it away to non-productive people, then those productive people go elsewhere and you simply run out of money and the system collapses.
>>67665549
We're fucked either way. Jobs are already being replaced with machines. Collectively we're headed towards a more sedentary way of life.
It's all downhill from here.
>>67665549
Fuck it and any kind of welfare.
>>67666154
Space travel when?
Why would I do a shit job if I could just get paid to do nothing?
Would be ok with it if it replaced the welfare we have today, but not in addition to.
>>67666030
Except no
We've had examples before and that doesn't happen

Don't do a shit job then. Do something you actually find interesting. Would you really sit around all day, every day, doing nothing of importance if you got a basic income? I'm talking about a very modest income, btw. Just enough to get by, but not enough to be completely comfortable.
>>67665549
Gordon has already summed up the debate on UBI, it's good.

>>67666359
Yes What happens is productive people just stop being as productive and the cycle goes on until everyone is equally starving while waiting in the bread line.
>>67666478
it was a pretty nice one not gonna lie f@m
>>67665549
Stupid idea.
Humans covet "more" by nature.
>>67666359
You mean like the USSR or like the socialist satellite states?

Go on
>>67665549
Most jobs are fairly worthless as it is. I wish we could just stop people from working 60 hours a week instead, but everyone ends up working overtime when the economy sucks.
Welfare recipients should be required either to perform some menial job (like cleaning the city, picking up garbage, trimming bushes, etc) or to become sterilized.
>>67666359
No, they literally go elsewhere, it's why American iPhones are made in Taiwan and imported, because less regulation there means cheaper prices and more profit.
Basic income is degeneracy. Basic jobs is what we're going to need.
>>67665549
I think it's a great idea
>remove all welfare programs and replace with UBI
>more money for everyone, no overhead
>If you don't break even in taxes what you earn from UBI, you don't get to vote
simple as that
>>67666762
Not all humans want more. That's why there are naturally classes.
If the current welfare state (including disability and social security) were to be completely abolished and replaced with this it would be preferable, but I'd rather replace it with nothing.
>>67666558
Until you get self cleaning toilets and automated garbage collection someone is going to have to do those shitty but necessary jobs. Mass automation at cheap costs is coming at some point in the future, but they've been saying the same about fusion power for decades. Why implement basic income when these jobs still need to be filled with human workers?
>>67666851
Regulation isn't necessarily the same as welfare.

No, everyone wants more, some just don't think it's worth it to get it. UBI is catered specifically for those.
>basic income
I'm starting to get skeptical. Why the fuck is it suddenly such a popular idea?
There is more to this than meets the eyes.
If we offered free welfare for life, do you think people would get sterilized voluntarily?
>>67667332
>why is it suddenly so popular
Because technological unemployment is on the horizon and no one's thought of a better solution.
>>67666762
>Humans covet "more" by nature
That's why UBI is brilliant. It's enough to keep people alive and in their homes when unemployed, but not enough to satisfy their desire for More Shiny Crap that they'll want to stay unemployed forever.
"Humans should get basic income the way that nature ensures that animals are all guaranteed food in the wild."
Entitled liberals. If you can't hunt, you won't eat. Enough already.
>>67667280
If you're not willing to work for something, you don't really want it.
Poor people just want sensual pleasures, which is why they drink, fuck, eat, etc too much.
>>67665549
It's not a matter of opinion, it's going to happen.
The future is already set. You only see a small part of it. When you think that the Global Government hasn't happened yet and you're on time to stop it, it already happened, it's just becoming public slowly.
It's just to get y'all used to it.

I assumed we were talking about a point in time when most of those jobs were already automated. I guess the real debate to be had here then is at what point do we start implementing basic income ideas.
There will almost certainly be a transition period where we go from "lots of jobs" to "not lots of jobs". Should we already have some sort of a basic income in place before this transition happens?
It's stupid just like minimym wage, the value of things is not write in stone, wages aren't low, it's just things got more expensive because inflation. The value of your currency changes so wages should too.
>>67667013
>If you don't break even in taxes what you earn from UBI, you don't get to vote
That doesn't really promote people to contribute to society or the economy.
>>67667705
Just make sure you don't pay them enough to get in vitro.
>>67667776
if it's -theoreticallly- possible to replace almost all jobs with robots, why shouldn't we use some system like basic income? If the robots can provide us with all the food we need, basic income could be a good idea to still have a good economy. Provided with some sort of negative inflation, where people are kinda forced to spend their money instead of saving it up, it could work and doesn't sound that bad
If we replace most jobs with robots, will engineers rule the world?
>>67667122
either you're paying really high such jobs or you create a clear need for immigrates.
since UBI is only for citizen
BI is a dangerous tool. I don't trust our Zionist overlords to implement it to our favour.
>>67667638
>If you're not willing to work for something, you don't really want it.
That's not true at all, ambition is not always proportionate to desire.
>Poor people just want sensual pleasures, which is why they drink, fuck, eat, etc too much.
Yes, and they always want more of that, which is why most of those poor people vote left, since they're promised more of it.
>Luddite Fallacy
Every. Fucking. Thread.

It feels like anyone with a basic understanding of economics has left /pol/ and the only people left are retarded communists.
>>67667203
It's not. Almost half of all jobs will be replaced by machines within 20-25 years. See how fucked you are

>>67665549
If everyone get the same money then all paid services would increase in price thus make the basic income pocket change.
Is this the newest version of everyone gets a medal for participation crap leftists do?
I like it. Technology and automation may create new jobs as it always has, but in the near future those jobs will mostly require specialised education. What is a 40 year old truck driver who left school at 16 to do when the majority of the jobs he's qualified for have been automated? Moving from the farm to the factory didn't require 4+ years of education. Drivers, secretaries, retail workers, salespersons etc. don't require much education. I can't see that holding up for much longer

Into the trash it goes
Ontario is supposedly rolling out basic income in a pilot program late in the year.
