Simple: he doesn't need to waste time at these debates anymore. Plus, it's better to split the vote between Cruz and Kasich at this point because it means less of a chance of Cruz catching up. Rubio just dropped out, so his voters now have to go for their second choice, which would either be Trump, Cruz, or Kasich. Trump knows that the questions will mostly go to either himself or Cruz, but Trump already has tons of attention. If he steps out for a bit and lets Kasich take the stage, the people who were gonna vote Rubio will instead vote for him because they'll actually get a chance to see that he's not so bad (and he has in fact been steadily rising in the polls albeit very slowly). If he provides a nice little edge against Cruz, Trump can team up with Kasich and ruin Cruz' chances of winning.
Plus, if Trump grabbed Kasich for the VP ticket, that would only get him more votes since the majority of Republicans would be forced to agree that they are the most reasonable duo imaginable in this election.
