Maybe you haven't travelled much, but I've worked in third world countries with dictators as matter of course - I work with the Red Cross - and everyone there knows that if you visit a foreign nation, you must follow the local laws, and your embassy is likely not going to do anything to help you if you run afoul of the law. Doesnt' even matter if you're innocent. It's not your country's jurisdiction and they have no legal basis for complaint. Other nations reciprocate this principle by not suggesting that their own nationals should be exempt from the laws when they act lawlessly while on vacation in your country.
You may not agree with the laws of the country that you're visiting, but you're still obliged to follow them. I sure wouldn't visit Germany and start breaking the laws there that I disagreed with. Your government wouldn't tolerate it and my government would disavow me completely. This is how the world works. it's naive to think otherwise.
