When Skyrim came out, and ever since, any reference of the game with him lead to how the Stormcloaks were superior, Skyrim was for the Nords, etc.
My first play through, I went Stormcloak mostly because the Empire tried to execute me (was playing a Bosmer).
Every play through after that, I went with the Imperials just because I wasn't playing a Nord and thought that they could actually stop the Aldmeri Dominion without the distraction of fighting in Skyrim.
I don't know if that would have been possible or not, but on my most recent play through I went full Nord and Stormcloak again. If they want us to help fight off the AD then they can acquiesce to our demands and actually fight them.
The real reason to pick Stormcloaks over Imperials, though, is that summoning Odahviing works MUCH better in the Battle for Solitude than the Battle for Windhelm. First time doing that was the highlight of the game for me.

The game is geared towards making you want to side with the Stormcloaks. The opening sequence makes siding with the imperials seem pretty stupid. There's a big allure to play as a Nord as well, since it takes place in Skyrim. Eventually they hamfist in this weird "racism" which would seemingly deter most normies from sticking with the Stormcloaks. The Stormcloaks are probably the canon victors in the fight, and the dragonborn in the game is probably canonically a Nord.
However, it's obvious to people on later playthroughs or why know anything about TES lore that siding with the imperials is best for unification amongst the human races. An independant Skyrim leaves the Empire even more fractured, and the huge rise in nationalism amongst the Nords after the bloody civil war type conflict makes it that much less likely they would side with the empire in an eventual revolt against the elves.

High Rock is iffy, since they already did that one in Daggerfall.
