SKYKING SKYKING, DO NOT ANSWER:

LIGHTNING.

Time: Three Eight

Authentication: Golf X-Ray

This is Andrews [Air Force Base] Out.

http://vocaroo.com/i/s0cCnCO9xAoP

One word code-phrases are rarely heard. Assumed to be a "scramble" alert.
>>
Sauce?
>>
That sounds normal i think.
If you hear anymore than two than shit is going down.
>>
>>67616150

The vocaroo link I posted was a recording I made via http://blerp2.dyndns.org:8901/ at 0138 EST on 8992.00 kHz USB at 3.08 kHz bandwidth.
>>
>>67616252

Normally, a SKYKING or "All Stations" call has an alpha-numeric code sent (A8TGF5NB...et al). A single word phrase is very rare.

This is more than likely a test, but maybe not.
>>
God damn it Kim just do something.
>>
>>67616854

"Lightning" sounds too obvious to me to be an alert to a nuclear launch.

Then again, back in November "Juggernaut" was used and 15 minutes later a alpha-numeric code was given (maybe "This was a test, stnd down.")

This time, I have not heard another SKYKING call yet.
>>
>>67617325
has anyone ever linked a skyking call with a political/military event?

New call now
>>
>>67617471

Yes. A 34 minute call went out in March 2015 when Russia started surprise drills next to Finland and Norway on March 16th.

>Had any good DX lately?
I haven't had a QSO in weeks. I often just listen for a long time at a stretch. SWDX though has been OK, SE Asia, China and Asiatic Russia come in but Australia and New Zealand are both low energy lately. I think because it's trans-equatorial and that can suck sometimes unless it's a straight N-S shot.

If you want a good tool to visualize propagation go to dxmaps.com - choose the band and enjoy. It's based on ham activity (CW skimmers) but useful for all shortwaver broadcast services as well, to see which paths are propagating.
>>
>>67620162

Yes. Ship-to-ship traffic on low power. When it gets near the Twente antenna, it gets picked up.

Sorry about that, but "Lightning" is an unusual call. Probably training, but hell, this is /pol/, so if it's not...

I don't claim to know what it means, but the traffic on HFGCS since was more active than normal after "lightning", so it could be something. Or, it could be nothing.

>help me based radio man! how do I ham radio? what are the basics?

You need a license and some radio gear. Go to eham.net and take the Tech practice exam until you can pass, then go to your nearest testing place and take your $15 with you and pass the test. Make sure to buy or check out the ARRL Handbook, it has everything you need.

>what do i need equipment wise? im interested in learning

If you're into radio now, and in this thread or always listening to the websdr there, I recommend getting an SSB capable shortwave set, that can run off batteries, and ideally can accept an external antenna input.

I recommend the Sony 7600GR. One anon already bought it (that i know of) and likes it, he might show up here too. Best radio for the price.

If the SHTF you'll want a radio because there will be no phone and no internet and the TV will just be shouting memes at you 24/7.

Later as you make your way from ham baby (and buy your first handheld transmitter) you'll start discovering what radios you like depending on your interest in ham radio. There are many sub-interests.

OK because I always post it, look at this ham radio antenna, operated by OH8X radio club in Finland. Bigger antenna farm than most governments own and operate. I believe that their 160m antenna is the largest *rotating* 160m antenna in the world.

Actually it depends on your country I believe. Some places like France will prosecute you for having a police scanner and any radio receiver in operation CAN BE DETECTED except a crystal radio. Believe it or not. We were doing just this from 15km away, airborne, during the Nam war to detect receivers in operation along the Ho Chi Minh trail. Read the (only publicly available) JASON report for more details.

Honest question, why do they use open radio broadcasts to communicate with each other in encrypted messages when they could just use some form of closed network?

You can't stop the signal.

As long as it's encrypted, why not up the cheapest and safest way to transmit?

Kick ass man!

What radio(s) do you have?
>>
>>67625971

Started with yaesu ft757gx for dat 160m... still got it, still use it. Also ft817nd for mobile. Looking hard at the ic 7300 for the next hf rig (so much cheaper than I thought it would be), I have hand helds for 2m/70cm... also looking at the ft 991 for an all rounder...

Tend to home brew antennas but also run a discone
>>
>>67626680
Very nice, I used to own an 817nd and I liked it a lot (even got a CW filter for it, pretty sweet). I like the 757, those 90's radios with the VFD readouts are cool. I believe INRAD makes some enhanced filters for it if you still want to soup that puppy up.

I run an Elecraft KX line and have some other stuff kicking around. I use a Chameleon M-loop for my antenna, I like it and it's nicely portable.

The 7300 is an SDR no? $1500 is what the anticipated price in the USA will be.
>>
>>67623637

there were at least 2 different ghoul posters (probably). there was a flight line operator (low/mid level guy) and somebody with access to a whole lot more intelligence, including supposedly a ghoul squadron deployment

if these are military comms, why aren't they encrypted?
>>
>>67627293

Yes 7300 is sdr and direct sampling... which is actually the appeal since rtl dongles is where I started and I love that live scope.

Interesting you mention the loops, I built FET based active HF antennas but the intermodulation and front end overload from local AM pisses me off, and high passing all that good shit seems pointless to me. Mag loops seem like a good compromise on space of an active and clarity of a long wire or dipole... I have heard good things.

If you're the dude who starts/perpetuates these radio threads then thank you. I encourage anyone who is interested in radio at all to consider getting licensed and on air.
>>
>>67627837
They are, with one-time pads which are still the only theoretically breakable encryption method.

However people try to learn about what's going on by keeping track of callsigns and also by analyzing how frequent the messages are transmitted.

It's called traffic analysis. There's a reason why Priyom (the millcom fan group) is like 1/2 Russians.
>>
>>67615961
just like the 999999 times this year already we've heard skyking, not a god damn thing is happening
>>
>>67623030
Closed/encrypted networks require keys and keys can fuck up, locking people who need to hear the messages out until they're updated. If someone gets the key and isn't supposed to you may never know. Using a key means you need to regularly update it which can be a pain in the ass especially if you have a worldwide network.

There's also a psychological element to knowing that anyone can listen into it. It makes you a lot more cautious and ass-covering when you transmit. People can get complacent on secured networks because they "think" they're safe.

Soruce: I did encrypted/secured radio stuff in the Air Force for flightlines and security forces and had to reencrypt people's shit when they let the batteries die.
>>
>>67628171
>the only theoretically breakable encryption method.

UNbreakable
>>
>>67628304

how about broadcasting a one-time pad stream of numbers from a sattelite
>>
>>67628129
>Yes 7300 is sdr and direct sampling... which is actually the appeal since rtl dongles is where I started and I love that live scope.

Neat. With I/Q output you can have the scope on your computer screen all huge too. My KX3 has this capability but the I/Q output is only 200 KHz wide or so, some day they promise a VGA output for the PX3 so you can display it in "HD" which will be interesting to see. I highly recommend you at least look at the KX3, it's a superb radio with brick-wall roofing filters. I am not really bothered by interference outside the passband any more.

Again a good roofing filter has done wonders for me but an HF bandpass filter could be good for your local AM problem. The mag loop helps too, it's directional and tends to reject local interference and lower my noise floor.

>If you're the dude who starts/perpetuates these radio threads then thank you. I encourage anyone who is interested in radio at all to consider getting licensed and on air.

I don't start them but I barge in and try to get people to at least buy themselves an SSB capable shortwave radio of their own if they're into listening to the HFGCS.

Radio's a true gentleman's hobby and I hope to QSO with you some day. I can use a large wire loop (instead of the aluminum hoop) and operate topband with my magloop at a decent efficency.

Physically. 95% of what I did involved handheld shit, so I'd have to connect to the unit, and install the code.

You'd have to ask some of the better radio nerds here, but the benefits of radio is that they're high power for low tech. Any sort of mass distribution of encryption keys would probably need an internet hookup now, which invites problems and more technology.

Coding your words is more secure and cheaper than coding your devices.

For stuff like squad-level radios I agree, the operation is time sensitive usually and after a couple hours / days it doesn't matter if they figure out what the code words meant.

For HFGCS the radio man will actually write down the letters he hears, take a paper one time pad out (serial numbered to the transmission) and then subtract the numeric values of each of the letters in the key from each of the letters in the message to obtain the decrypt.

Wing attack plan R or whatever. Bombers are equipped to run without any radio contact at all once they receive their orders.

I'm not sure how it works but I bet $100 it's a total clusterfuck with different physical key loading methods, different encryption making interop a nightmare, etc.

I know interop issues exist and our new Soldier Waveform Radios fucking suck ass, the battery doesn't last as long as they say, and sometimes it has to be rebooted, and also it has this irritating way of defaulting to "least common denominator" encryption.

They gave a bunch out for a field test and the Marines shipped the whole lot of them back to Thales. Theoretically this radio kicks ass, though it's a piece of shit in implementation.
