Not a Spaniard, but I grew up in Spain (from ages 2 to 9) and never quite understood why they all wanted to separate from each other. At that time, from my childlike eyes, you're all basically the same. You're all passionate about sports, anime, nationalism, and religion (maybe not anymore on the religion, but everyone was deeply Catholic when I lived there) and you all love football.
Even the encierro and the corrida were common among Catalonians, Basques, Spaniards, ect. I was actually SHOCKED when Catalonia banned the corrida because when I lived there, Barcelona sold more tickets to the corrida than to football.
When I was a kid, I loved the festes, encierros, corridas, the food, and I felt like I lived in a "real" country
