Elections are all kind of pointless as long as they ascribe to a central group or ideaology or allow themselves to have such connection. The only relevant candidate that doesn't really have a monetary incentive or political obligation is Trump, so perhaps, there's some really amazing puppeteering taking place. But there's no evidence for this, only room for it to occur.
Otherwise I also believe he is a brilliant man and strangely perceived as an idiot, but is using this as a good ploy. He has a famous personality as well so it wouldn't work to well if he wasn't consistent. He's too the point where if he were to tone down, clarify stuff in a more precise way, he would win the election.
I think he's a man who is cautious, waits, and snares his prey. Basically what a drunken kungfu artist is.
