Thing is, Muslims were like that since forever. The Crusades happened, and both the Catholics and the Muslims, and even the Protestants and the Orthodox did terrible things, said terrible things.
Now look. Catholics preach peace and are quite liberal. Protestants range from okay to mean people, but nothing worse than that. The Orthodox mind their own damn business.
Muslims have stayed the same since the times of religious war. They have not moved on. I now it sounds lefty, but some change IS necessary. There's a fine line between tradition and being primitive, and Islam is still primitive. (humorously, Catholics went a little too far with change, accepting socialist values and such.)

It's fact that Catholics and Christians did shitty things back then. So did Muslims. Catholics and Christians believed you'd have to burn people at the stake for heresy, Muslim s believed it was stoning. Catholics and Christians believed spilling non-believer blood on holy grounds was beautiful (i remember a reading in High School about that), and Muslims believed the exact thing.
Now Catholics and Christians want to convert you through catechisms or faith classes. They "punish" heresy by forgiveness. They pray for peace through mutual understanding.
Muslims, in general, still believe that stoning the infidels, that beheading non-believers is righteous. They still have primitive beliefs.
Oh, and sure, they pray for peace too. The "religion of peace" will finally stop killing people when no one disagrees with them anymore.

Mankind figured out a long time ago that beliefs and patterns of behavior are established in childhood.
This is true of you right now, though you may not even realize it. You have something called "Intrinsic Memory" that isn't in the forefront of your conscience but basically determines who you are.
These Muslim extremists are brought up believing this horseshit.
When everyone else around you seems to believe something - when all the people you know, the people who love you and take care of you, feed you, etc. - when all those people believe a certain thing, you will believe it too.
If you were raised in a religious household you understand. You might not be religious now, but you had to let it go at some point. When you were a kid, you believed it.
The Muslims don't expose themselves to other ideas, so they never reach that point in adulthood when they can make a valid choice based on NEW information.
