Genealogy. I'm not sure what public records - censuses, obituaries, baptismal records, marriage records, etc. - are like in Mexico, but they're quite extensive in Canada and the UK.
Sometimes you encounter dead ends but there is no reason you shouldn't be able to trace your family back to, at the very least, the 19th century, unless your adopted or something similar.

I don't see what's to be proud of having ancestors you didn't personally know. I'm white for whatever the fuck that's worth these days. That's about all I get out of it. Actually my hair is light brown because of the Irish (was blonde until I was 11), but my beard grows in dark black. Pretty sure that means I'm not completely white.

Sorry for coming across as an ass, but the reason I know my ancestry is because of relatives who have traced back our lineage and they go on and on about something that matters so little that it bothers me. Nothing wrong with being proud of your heritage, but keep in mind that it doesn't define you or your own accomplishments or failures.

It's not so much about pride, desu. It's about genealogy as a hobby. I'm as "proud" of my grandparents as I am of my ancestors 1000 years ago. I like learning about their lives, where they were born, what they work they did, where they lived, how many children they had.
