I think expressionism is a great place to start, because people like Kirchner and Nolde have this fantastic focus on strange angles, jarring views, and painterliness. It's striking, bizarre, and really exemplifies the idea that art functions as expression rather than image capturing.
Kandinsky and Mondrian are two other favorites of mine, both of whom would be great to look into.

To say nothing about the existence of a formal propensity for weird, stylized angles, or for scenes that are basically just abstract expressions of emotion (I'm pretty sure there isn't one of either; though I'd be really happy to be proven wrong, since that sounds like it'd be pretty cool).
