Why does America only have two prominent parties and any other party is entirely irrelevant?
Why can other countries have multiple parties with success but America is stuff with only two?

you couldnt say UK politics is a two horse race any more though. besides the Greens the rest have made huge gains lately, from UKIP to SNP, whether you agree with them or not. even the Lib Dems were half of the last coalition government.

Because voting for a third party damages the big party you are closest to and helps the opposite ideology win the elections
voting libertarian takes votes from republicans and gives higher chances for democrats to win
voting green takes votes from democrats and helps the republican party win

It depends, in the UK some seats are so safe that voting 3rd party makes no difference whatsoever. In that case the extra votes are simply to add legitimacy to the party you support by increasing their percentages
