I actually do know.
My grandfather was a peasant who was born in a French speaking region of Switzerland and had some property in Zermatt (also Switzerland). He moved to Bavaria (Munich) for work around 1934 and was doing well until the war started.
From what little I know and what my father told me, my grandfather ended up losing everything he had and his relatives ended up dead. Shortly before the end of the war he met a Portuguese lady and they moved to Brazil, where she had inherited a small farm from her father.
That's how they came to this country.
