The whole point of the war was to stop Germany from becoming too powerful and from challenging the established powers.
It was a continuation of the Treaty of Versailles.
But both France and Britain got played though. They were all suckered into a war that actually ended their supremacy.... permanently. They ended up US pawns shortly after the war.
