We use corn syrup in everything instead of cane sugar. That's because we prop up our own small, struggling cane sugar production by enforcing high import tariffs on sugar. That's why Mexico, which is poorer than the US, has real sugar in their Coke. The price isn't artificially inflated there.

Corn has a lower energy cost for most of the processes used to extract useful goods and/or energy from most of the plant. Even if you wanted to change the crops over to something like switchgrass or other ethanol varieties you would not have even close to the same energy output as corn because corn requires overall less thermal energy to extract.

Adding on to this the ability to use byproducts such as carbon dioxide from the fermentation process, heating from the leftovers of the drying process, corn syrup which can be used in most goods as filler and a lot more.
Shelled corn when dried to 15% moisture can be burned for 7,000 BTU/lb and is a BYPRODUCT. Wood for comparison is 8,000 BTU/lb and is the entire usage with the only byproduct being at the consumer end which is charcoal. Useless to most consumers and ends up as trash.
