The estimated number of dead civilians in each nuclear bombing is roughly the same as the estimated number dead from the Tokyo firebombing. The targeting of civilian centers with aerial bombing was unfortunately the norm in the second world war, both in Asia and Europe. If one wants to attack the nuclear bombings they really ought to condemn the whole bombing campaigns they were a part of.
However even the commanders in charged recognized that what they were doing would be seen as morally reprehensible.
