There's a camp that actually believes the people that commited the murders scapegoated a crazy man and made up a bunch of bullshit about him being a charismatic king.
If you read the facts of the case, it really seems like everyone that wasn't him was completely in control of their faculties the entire time, or moments where he would have control, it was always supported by one of the other guys jumping in to second. There's also debate on whether he was even the one that the ideas were coming from originally in those scenes.
It's actually fascinating. The guy is a nutjob, without a doubt. But you have a practical scooby doo gang following him around that were into drugs and being wild.
I honestly think he's crazy, weak, and drug addled, and got picked up by another guy, and the gang expanded a bit after a couple parties, and then they commited the murders and in his stupor got convinced he's a god or something.
He also acknowledges he doesn't know how to function outside jail and is more comfortable inside. So he'd be an easy sell to volunteer as scapegoat and everyone else just playing the victim.

He was nothing.

He was charged that through conspiracy. If you conspire to murder someone all members of the conspiracy serve the same punishment for the same crimes as the entire party is considered responsible.

Apparently.
