Genesis II contradicts Genesis I so you have to assume that one or the other is allegorical or you go mad.
Assuming that the word "day" in Genesis I is a translation error (the Hebrew word "YM" can mean era) it's the most plausible "creation myth" our species has produced. There are a few notable errors (whales evolving alongside fish before land animals evolved for example). Genesis II by contrast is animist bullshit obviously left over from when some backwater tribe was absorbed into the Kingdom of Israel.
