OP you do understand that the only two things that Russia was good at were the only two things it was competing with the outside world on? Weapons and Space science. Every other technology from cars to toasters it was shit at. It's machine guns were good and and it's space launchers were good because it was competing aginst the U.S. and that is it. It was only good at space launchers because space Rockets and ICBM's are essentially the same tech so you could even lump space launch into that military thing. If you look at it realistically whatever sucess Russias had over the last 60 years is a complete repudiation of socialism. Because only the things it was only good at things it was forced to to compete on.

No one forced them to go into space science. But like I said the technology needed to launch space missiles is the same as launching ICBM's since they were doing that anyway they devoted some effort to competing against and embarassing the USA. The upside for them was to make them look good, but the United states was motivating them to be first, which they were on several instances.
