Your friend is correct, because socialism is a system of economy.
What you mean has been called socialism a lot, but isn't socialism. It's general leftism, and it's a cancer upon humanity.
But that doesn't matter, because we didn't have socialism. We had a mixed market economy. Social democracy. Handing the state the jobs where you can abuse economics of scale without needing a lot of advancement in the first place, leaving the rest to the market to drive the economy, and using some of the profits for the good of all.
It worked very, very well. Until 1990.
