Doesn't it reflect extremely poorly on the US military that after 50 years they have still not managed to reunify the Korean Peninsula?

I mean North Korea should be pathetically easy to reconquer. A small nation of malnourished peasants with no air force or navy? Not only that, but the DPRK is actively developing nuclear weapons and makes threats against the United States. Combine that with the DPRK's well documented use of a slave labour and torture, and the US military would have ample justification for military action. North Korea is an internal pariah: nobody would fault the USA for taking them over.

And yet, it has failed to act. Does this prove that the US military is essentially a paper tiger?

North Korea might just be best Korea

>Actually taking back North Korea
North Korea is using technology, infrastructure, and a type of leadership literally from the 1950s.

We're going on 60 years of progression, each year getting faster and faster.

Trying to re-unify both countries would result in a logistical clusterfuck not seen since WW2, and that's not even including the whole "Literally 24 million people in a cult against you" thing.
>>
>>66882618
No, it means that North Korea is dangerously close to both China and Russia, who will assuredly take offense if US came in and stomped out NK.
>>
>>66882618
NK isn't really "independent;" it is a Chinese satellite state/buffer zone. It's not like you'd just be dealing with NK; you'd be stumbling right into a Chinese red zone. And that would be a horrific mess.
>>
>>66882618
No. It would be far to expensive. An army of 1.1 million regardless of training or physical condition is still an army that will endure for quite some time. They do have an airforce. Outdated, but still effective in some ways. We wouldn't risk damaging already poor relations with neighboring countries either. China would be pissed as would Russia.
>>
China doesn't want an American ally on its border, also NK is so poor and undeveloped, that taking in all those uneducated peasants would fuck SK's economy for decades.

>Expensive

North Korea is barely even a country. They don't have any navy or air force. Their army is composed of malnourished conscripts. A single marine expeditionary force would be able to take the entire country with little resistance. It wouldn't cost any more than a typical training mission. Just imagine this bad boy rolling up to Kim Jong Un's mansion. What is he gonna do? Throw rocks at it?

Use his artillery, RPGs, his Air Force, His Navy, and his Army to destroy that little fucking bucket of scrap?

You're acting like NK is a pile of sticks. It's not. If a country like Australia went up against it with no support, there's a decent chance that they'd destroy Australia in a fight.
>>
>>66882618
You need to understand how crazy north Koreas citizens are. They all see Kim as a god. If we were to take them over, it would be Iraq all over again. The insurgents would be innumerable
>>
>>66882618
First of all, the Korean war was not a US effort. It was a UN effort. The US did not fight under its own flag.
Secondly, North Korea has the 4th largest active member army in the world. Counting reserve forces, they have the largest army in the world. Conquering them would not be a cake walk.

Thirdly, our main goal is to protect South Korea, since North Korea does have the missile technology to attack Seoul. Provoking conflict would cause a ridiculous amount of damage to our allies, which we want to avoid at all costs.

Lastly, North Korea is (tentatively) supported by China. Attacking North Korea would create even more tension with China, building upon the troubles we're having in the south China Sea. We're in cold war 2 right now, and nobody wants to fire the first shot. This is just a military flexing match.
>>
>>66883605
This is Western propaganda. Several North Koreans are challenging both local and national authority. Sure they're only making small steps, but its still progress. Several Koreans are noticing that the way they're treated is not fair and when confronted they stand their ground.
>>
>>66883328

>You're acting like NK is a pile of sticks.

That's not fair. Sticks have useful properties. You can use them to make fires or poke things. Birds even use them to build nests.

>>66883328

>If a country like Australia went up against it with no support, there's a decent chance that they'd destroy Australia in a fight.

Oh come on. You could land untrained Kangaroos on the peninsula and that would be enough to bring Kim Jong Un to his knees.

>Use his artillery, RPGs, his Air Force, His Navy, and his Army to destroy that little fucking bucket of scrap?

Navy? Air Force? Artillery? The DPRK has none of that stuff. And don't even try parroting that epic meme that the North Korea can flatten Seoul with Artillery. The CIA did research concluded that they would barely even be able to dent the city. Seoul is MASSIVE and they run drills on a regular basis. DPRK would be lucky to kill even 0.5% of cities population.

Just like Nazi Germany after WW2... oh wait, we actually did it the right way back then by killing or imprisoning every Nazi supporter and raping every German woman. No mercy until unconditional surrender is achieved.
>>
>>66883208
You do that realize that they do have MIG 21/23's and a handful of su25s along with il28 bombers, about 900 aircraft in total. Outdated but still useful for air defense. Again a 1.1 million man armt nothing to take lightly no matter their condition.
>>
>>66884345

Of all those aircraft, they might be able to get like 10 of them to actually fly. They have a tiny core of functional aircraft that they use for airshows and that's it.

>1.1 million man army

Saddam had a huge army too. Guess what? They all deserted or surrendered at the first opportunity. They fought only because they were being forced to, no loyalty whatsoever. The North Koreans would be no different.

If the Chinese continue to greatly piss off many nations I'm sure the proper response is a Joint allied military take over of the north.

its a textbook buffer state

Dont be so arrogant to assume that you know the US strategy in regards to NK.

Sure, it's possible that the US wants to "reunify" the peninsula, but then again, there are aother possible objectives for that particular military presence.

North Korea gives the US a good excuse to put an enormous military force on the Asian subcontintent, and to arm South Korea immensely.

If the US ever needed to wage war in Asia, or project its power deep into asia, or even into Russia, having its enormous military presence in SK would be very useful.

>tldr, think more broadly. The US military has much more complex strategic objectives than "unite korea"

Thats fucking stupid.

The whole country is basicly a whole landmine forest, a booby trap. Probably traps everywhere switzerland style.

It's just prove that in conventionals wars the price of the life of a western soldier is too high.

We can't nuke it first because MUH rules of geneva convention.

Reagan said the greater risk lie in appeasement, he is right. Peace at all costs.
