Britfag transplanted in America with a question: Why do your former servicemen like to wear these? Who is it for exactly? While I respect their decision to serve their country I have to wonder why they feel the need to display their former service for all to see. Can anyone explain this to me?
>>
I never understood it either and I'm Murican. I never "served" and never will.
>>
>>66875248
Because they killed gooks and we should celebrate that.
>>
>>66875366
you lost against ricefarmers
nothing to be proud of
>>
It's a warning to not make loud noises around them or they might snap and kill a bitch.

It's kinda like the deaf kid street signs.
>>

the fact that you dont understand is exactly why you arent an empire anymore

Just to be clear I'm not pointing out JUST Vietnam vets, but all vets in general. That's just the first image that came up on Google.

>>66875573
Shouldn't you be getting ready for school?

>>66875604
I ask again, to what end?
>>
Suck a dick you fucking britcuck.
>>
>>66875248
Recognition. And, in the case of Vietnam, most of those guys were drafted -- if I was plucked from my home and had to watch my buddies due at the hands of children, I'd want people to know my achievement.
>>
>>66875664
let me spell it out for you

a society that respects those who fight and kill for the societies wealth safety and well being last longer and grow healthier than those who stigmatize or ignore them
>>
To try and score free drinks I presume.
>>
>>66875248
They want free shit.

>>66875797
Nam vets were treated like shit though.
>>
>>66875872
Very much so.
>>
>>66875664
You cannot possibly have spent any time in America without noticing that ours is a ridiculously militaristic culture that glorifies soldiery and violence as a result of decades of Cold War indoctrination.

Remember that a hundred years ago the USA considered having a standing army at all to be the hallmark of a failed state. It took decades of concerted propaganda to reverse this opinion, and part of it was by establishing the Cult of the Soldier.

Not good or bad, simply true.
>>
>>66875872
At the time, yes. Now though vets are really respected.
>>
>>66875872
it should tell you how valuble it is when communist subversion specifically targets it
>>
>>66875951
They should have won the war then.

Every time americlaps try fighting by themselves they end up running away and losing.
>>
>>66876107
Yes, I'm sure 1960s era Britain could have saved Vietnam, much as it was capable of holding on to all of its colonies.

People in vietnam to this day still gets born with defects after Agent orange, they killed more than a million "civillians" and there have opened up Macdonalds in vietnam.
I would call that a victory t b q h
>>
>>66875248
Maybe they're just proud of what they did in their life and are free to display such pride in public?
>>
>>66876107
Stop, you probably know nothing about the war. The lessons of Nam are still being ignored. Iraq/Afgan/Syria.
>>
>>66875248
In reference to Vietnam veterans specifically, I imagine they wear those now because ofnhowbthey were treated in the 70's. As far as others, I dunno. My wife grabbed me an Afghanistan sticker but I just stuck it on my computer. I'd rather not anyone just walking past my car know that I'm a veteran.

>>
>>66875248
It's a "proud to serve" thing. That's what it boils down to. They were proud to serve in the military, and that was the theater they served in.
>>
Militarist culture is pry of the fabric of the USA. Corporate America rewards servicemen, civilians are encouraged to thank them for service and soldiers are constantly given free handouts for showing up in uniform. Want to get upgraded on a flight? Show up at the gate Ina uniform, if it's not sold out you have good odds.
>>
>>66875248
Because they seek validation from rednecks/former armed service members for being welfare queens.
>>
>>66876936
>, civilians are encouraged to thank them for service
As former military I can say that while most of us smile and say thank you in return we really don't care. Sometimes it was more of a pain in the ass to be in uniform because just trying to get from one side of an airport to the other while being stopped and thanked every 5 feet got old fast

The contry that USA was supporting no longer exists, the north took all over.
This is a severe case of loss where none of your main objectives are achieved.
>>
>>66875248
Why don't you ask someone who has served you dumb cuck
>>
>>66877262
I don't want to see soldiers disrespected but at the same time going the other direction is just as unsettling. No one is a special little snowflake for having served. It's somewhat insulting to other types of civilian service that can be just as dangerous. No one gives school teachers in inner cities or vice cops public attaboys, despite their job hazards and service at shit wages. It's pretty fucked up that society is getting programmed to pay respect to people for wearing military uniforms.

Honest answer? Because due to my accent I tend to have things explained to me slowly as if I were somehow mentally challenged

Example: First week living in the country I asked a woman for directions to a buffet where I'm supposed to meet some people for dinner. Not only did she give me the directions like she was instructing a toddler how to put on pants by themselves for the first time, but she then asked me "You do know what a buffet is right?" as if somehow this concept has never left the shores of America before.
>>
>>66875248
>>66875664

Its a "non-uniform" amongst us service-members, giving us an idea of where each other's been, what they've done, and occasionally providing someone with a talking point in a local VFW.

Ultimately, however, it is just a hat with one's service ribbons upon it. You've probably yet to see the guys that wind up decorating their hats with their entire DD-214. It gets pretty silly, making yourself a target like that.
>>
>>66876107

Crack a book, spend some time on wikipedia, and talk to a Vietnam vet...

Or do you hate doing actual research on a topic and prefer to shitpost from a position of ignorance?

>>66877909

But we still own the current country, so we still win.

I'm a Vet, but I don't out myself unless people ask me about it.

Which they ask me about it plenty since I am missing an arm.
>>
>>66875248
It's really to identify each other so they can strike up conversations with people that served in the military.

It's pride anon. They are proud of their service, as they should be. Most people in America have high regard for our veterans (at least the conservatives do).

You are looking at it in a weird way. For them it's about being proud of their service.
>>
>>66879456
I lost my arm when roving and an IED went off near the Humvee. It was a weird kind of moment, like, "Ow holy fuck, my ears fucking hurt and I can't see shit." "Ow holy fuck, my shoulder really hurts." Then actually looking at the mangled remains of what was once your arm followed by screaming and passing out.

It was a rough couple of months afterwards, and its been an interesting set of years afterwards.
>>
>>66879006
>so we still win
I know you're being philosophical, but the excuse to intervene into Vietnamese Civil War was "avoid the spread of comunism into Indochina".
Your government obvious not only fail in that mission, but let your former enemy (Soviet Union) spread his area of influence.

>Result: North Vietnamese victory
>Withdrawal of American-led forces from Indochina;
>Communist governments take power in South Vietnam, Laos and Cambodia;
>South Vietnam is annexed by North Vietnam.
>Territorial changes: Reunification of North and South Vietnam into the Socialist Republic of Vietnam.

Vietnam was a magnifient failure. There is nothing to be proud about that war.
>>
It's usually the older ones who wear it

I prefer the Naval variant however because it says what boat they were on
>>
>>66875248
Because recognition faggot. Someone might give them a free coffee or some shit. Piss off to lingland.>>66875248
>>
>>66879127
Pretty much this.

I still don't get the people who dress up in full uniform and walk around town though.
>>
As far as I'm concerned, if you served in Korea or Vietnam, then you can wear whatever the hell you damn please.

Although you should probably go for something more slick than just blaring it on a baseball cap.
>>
>>66879789
Was it worth it?
>>
>>66879789
God bless you anon.

It initially got me out of a "No goal road", it opened a realm of possibilities that I could freely pick from. However, there are times when the Wheel of Fate lands on you, and you have to face the music. It could've been worse. I could've lost my legs, my sight, my hearing, my mental capacity, or even my life. Trading an arm for unlimited possibilities, and a wiser greater mind, doesn't seem so bad now as it did when the transaction occurred. It's kind of the reason I don't go bragging that I'm a Vet, because I took something that breaks my brothers, and turned it into an advantage that has only bettered myself. I don't need pity or a half assed "Thanks". My missing arm is not a weakness, it is a strength that has forced me to become greater than I already was.

So in a weird way.

It kind of was.
>>
Because we are an extreme militaristic culture. We hold the military in high regards. That's basically it.
>>
>>66880687
Well it semmed to gain you some perspective on life if nothing else, few peolpe ever manage to gain that.

We see honor in fighting for, and serving, one's country.

Peasant cultures wouldn't understand.
>>
>>66875248
People who have no intelligence or other value join the military because the government constantly pushes the idea that dying for Israel is the most honorable and important thing. The leeches latch onto this, because otherwise they would have to admit they are worthless.

It's so they can recognize one another in public.

Kind of like a dagger tattoo on the shoulder for Royal Marines.
>>
>>66875248
Because all Vietnam vets got was the hat.
>>
>>66884660
You get all kinds in the military. Interestingly, the people you get in the community, but also pilots too, mostly do it for themselves. They want to see if they can make it, overcome the personal challenge.

They like to be thanked.
Saw a Korean war vet wearing one yesterday just sitting in a park wearing it. They're fishing for compliments occasionally something for free.

why do people wear clothing with their favorite sports team on it? with their unis? with places they went on vacation? with sayings like worlds best grandpa?
because they are proud of it

kind of this. For that generation, the saw the great welcome home ww2 vets got, but they, the Vietnam generation, didn't get shit really. Hell they were often even looked down on.

They are trying to justify the massive amounts of money they spent

because they are insecure about their other accomplishments and must prove they have a 'nice life'.

because they earned it in a cage death match.. why do you think there are so few old people and why they keep disappearing.

>>66889295

It is nothing to do with pride or public recognition. Think of the context, think of the people that west these hats.

This is how people networked in the days before Facebook.

>OH I see you are a Vietnam veteran! I too am a veteran of the war in Vietnam!
>Why hello fellow veteran where did you serve?
>blah blah blah blah.....

>>66889295
>with sayings like worlds best grandpa?

Hahaha I can't deny that
>>
>>66875248
It became a thing after Vietnam because those vets were so hated by the hippies and leftist culture, that htey started shoving it into everyone's face ever chance they got. Kind of a cult of veterans started at some point. My grandfather was a WWII vet, but you'd never know it. He would never have paraded it around. I don't dispariage vietnam vets for this, but it is kind of undignified. Also makes an incentive for frauds to run around pretending to be vets to get attention and good treatment. Just seems foolish.
>>
>>66875248

Afghan vet here. We wear the hats because we still have pride after our years of service long ago, also a tribute to never forget those fallen.

I have 2 hats, as well as a Trump hat and a WPWW beanie.
