That isn't true, Rudd was still ahead in the polls when he was removed, Abbott was in a position the liberals would have had the biggest Federal loss ever.
It's got nothing to do with his confidence, the guy managed to piss off the last 15 people still loyal to him when he criticized the progress of submarines.
If/when (probably when) they replace Turnbull it will probably be the Rights candidate Morrison, or it will be a compromise candidate in Bishop.
They or they will go for fresh face and competence in Ley or Corman, or a factional powerbroker with ambition like Pyne.
There's no reason for them to support Abbott as all it does is support the most conservative elements of the base who have no where else to go.
