It doesn't sound like outright BS, although I would like a source before I consider it with any weight. My family buys fake champagne so the kids and anyone who can't/doesn't want to drink during thanksgiving and christmas dinner, they are cheap and easy to find and look just like the real thing.
I also recall him saying a relative of his suffered from alcoholism and it destroyed his life, and he avoids the stuff because of it. Can't remember who it was though.
There is literally no reason for him to lie about drinking.
