I live in New York, and walking around with a gun without a concealed carry permit is basically asking to be arrested. Instead I carry a couple of knives, and I honestly don't care if they're legal (they're close; the law here is fucking weird. It's not based on inches, but on fingers of length, because fuck logic). One is a short (4") fixed blade with a nylon wrapped handle, with a horizontal sheath that goes through my belt loop. The second is a 5.5" lock back folding knife that I keep in my front pocket.
My goal isn't to kill anyone with them, just to wound them or scare them off if they try to fuck with me too badly. There are quite a lot of spooks in my area, but I've thankfully only had to pull out a knife once. As soon as the dindu saw it, he bolted.
