The short version: States already act independently in a large number of areas. However, the way everything is structured here would completely break down should you introduce actual country-style borders or try and create a tax/regulation of import/export between them.
There's also the whole countries requiring a standing army thing and how that would weaken the land mass as a whole, without even getting into how building it would literally cripple each divided "region."
As well, if the fairy-land OP were to somehow become an actual thing, the mass-migration out of the area, both of individuals and companies/businesses would be huge. It would also be completely flooded with a criminal population seeking a form of refuge.

we had this. each state was autonomous for a while, the articles of confederation reflect that.
the "great experiment" was the exact intention of the founders, and what they fought for beyond their liberation from the crown. without the crown, each state could prove to the others that its way of doing things was superior, and, we could therefore all benefit by adopting only the successful organizations among the states. any economic experimenting that went wrong would be contained to only the state it was attempted in.
then what happened is the framers conspired to turn this system into a true centralized government. they closed themselves up in secret, wrote the US constitution, and then used george washington and his men to impose it by force. states that did not send elected delegations to the first convention were threatened with invasion, and then, they were simply assigned a non-elected delegation by the convention itself as if it was already a government. there were a few tax rebellions right afterward and those were shut down with force, too -- taxation without representation came back immediately.
a lot of ameriburgers don't even know these things happened. if they do know about them they believe the establishment historians' own version of the story with whatever rationalization is made up to justify it.

Revolutionary war tactics were, overall, pretty crude and simple. Arms manufacturing was much more simple and didn't require as much precision machinery.
There was also the whole Britain being separated by the entire North Atlantic and their Naval power relying on Sails as their method of movement.
The colonies at the time had a larger population than there was a British standing army, and the effectiveness of handing someone with little to no training a gun was much more effective than if you were to try and do that with people today. So all they had to do was run chip damage, do guerrilla warfare where possible and just hold out.
Oh and the whole France and Spain providing immense Naval pressure was also pretty fucking important.
