Well the economy was better under Clinton than it was under Bush. But it was also better under Clinton than it was under Obama.
The typical reason is the recent Republican party has become a party of over eager warhawks which causes massive financial strain. An isolationist with similar tax policies and one willing to make massive cuts would probably be the best for the current economy.
Also two contrary points; Newt Gingrich was there with Clinton balancing his budget and doing a hell of a job with it and he was a Republican, and as Friedman said the Clinton administration received the bulk of the economic boom from the tax policies made under Reagan and Bush Sr.
As for defending Trump's statement on the matter I think it was a dig at the Neo-Cons more than at the Republican party historically.
