Believe it or not, most voters aren't informed about the issues or really anything. Most people have a vague idea of who the candidates even are.
I worked the primary polls on my state on Super Tuesday. We have an semi-open primary, which means that independent voters (who make up a majority of both my state and the national electorate) can vote for either party. I hear people say things like "Which party is Clinton in?", or "I don't know who is running, can I Google them?"
Independent voters are mostly total fucking morons who don't know even the most basic facts when they walk in to vote. And that's who you have to appeal to in order to win. Trump will have to appeal to these moronic independents with things that appeal to them.
It doesn't matter if his supporters will put him to task. His base will vote for him regardless, he knows that, and appealing to independents will be more important once the general election is underway.
Because when it is down to Trump or Clinton, and Trump moves towards the center, you'll still see him as the lesser of two evils. "Gee Trump reversed every single thing he said during the primary campaign, but I'm sure that's just politics, guys! He'll definitely start speaking his mind again once elected and not be thinking immediately about reelection like every other president does! And anyway, at least he's not Clinton, right! h-ha ha!"
