The incredibly tiny levels of heavy metal preservatives in vaccines has never been linked to any illness after repeated studies. There has never been a single proven case of autism actually being caused by a vaccine or any ingredient in a vaccine.
The few studies showing apparent neurological issues after injecting a vaccine with something like 100x the amount of thimerosal into rats were found to have many flaws.
Finally, mercury exposure is not even tied to autism. That is, even regular old organic mercury exposure at a young age, at levels far higher than the amounts found in vaccines. Even though mercury poisoning and exposure to mercury at a young age is linked to lower IQ and various neurological issues, it's not actually linked to autism. Kids would be dumber, but not autistic.
That said, they are phasing out thimerosal, which is probably a good idea just to be 100% safe and to improve public health since people will trust vaccines more (even though they have no real reason to distrust them).
On the very small chance some issue is eventually proven to be tied to vaccines, it probably won't be autism.

This is usually a reaction to a particular ingredient in the vaccine itself, not the virus itself, and not the thimerosal itself at all. The reactions are usually allergic and thats totally fine because not all humans are the same effectively. Allergic reactions are usually and easily treated with Epi-pens and benedryl. Their reactions are temporary and few kids ever die of such reactions since the reactions are instant effects like other allergens are.

Vaccine dosages are given based by weight, IE, an adult is given a proportionate amount relative to their weight, the dosage for a kid is NOT the same for the adult or vice versa.
