There should be some way for a person to make a livable income. It could be land to subsist on or federal service or some New Deal type jobs. I'm not necessarily opposed to basic income, but its probably a better idea for recipients of basic income be required to do some work for the government.

A government should ensure a decent quality of life for all those willing to take part in it and do their part for the community.
A government however should not be forced to give everyone within it's borders a bunch of benefits when they themselves do not give anything back.
Only after complete automation and we enter a post scarcity society. It would be a great solution to ensure that the resources you consume do not over burden your share of the automated system. For instance if food was free, what is to stop some ass hole from taking all the food in the store and throwing it in the trash? With UBI it would ensure you could still obtain all your needs without exhausting the resources.

Australia is falling apart in terms of it's intellectual capabilities and it's businesses are rotting.
This is largely because the government hasn't been able to maintain a balance between a free market and a sustainable economy.
We didn't need a "basic living income" 20 years ago, because our wages were so high and our cost of living so low.
If you found yourself unemployed for a period, the unemployment benefits more than covered it.
Now we have half our population on hamster wheels, essentially paying someone elses debt and reinvesting nothing themselves (someone else increasingly being Chinese migrants or simply Chinese investors and retiring Baby Boomers).
They need to break that cycle, otherwise we're just going to end up like the Philippines or some other shitty third world country that does nothing productive or innovative.
But then again, as we can see in America, anyone attempting to return to standards of the 1950's and 60's is clearly Hitler.
