Jim Webb is what Reagan Republicans were like in the 1980s ... by today's standards: flaming leftist liberals.
Webb left the Republican Party because it drove into the extreme right wing ditch, but he barely qualifies as a "liberal"or a Democrat only because politics have been pulled so far to the right since the Gingrinch Revolution and the Contract on America.
Webb would have made a good vice president for George H W Bush. If he had been VP then instead of the brain dead Quayle, Bill Clinton would have lost the 1992 election.
It would be a fascinating study in history to try and figure out if Clinton could have made a second, successful run in 1996 after that.
Webb will never be accepted back by the Republican party in his lifetime, and he has thoroughly polluted the well with the Democrats now. Had he just stepped back from his run for the Presidency as a Democrat and thrown his support behind "whoever wins the Democratic ticket,"he would be looking at a VP possibility this year or a run at the Presidency again in 2024 as a Democrat.
But he's pretty much fucked himself out of American politics at the Big League level. His last gasp might be as a Congressman, or perhaps a State governor. But he's shot himself in the face for Senator or the Whitehouse forever now.
