Once you're on the moon, any sort of deep space mission becomes much easier. This is because you can build completely different rockets in space/on the moon as you don't need to worry about escaping the atmosphere or gravity. You could have completely difference designs that would be utterly shit for getting from the surface of the earth into space.
Additionally, solar power would be much more efficient on the moon than it is on earth.
It would also be a great place to test out permanent structures on planets humans can't live on naturally, rather than going to mars and suddenly realizing your shit doesn't work.
