nobody is saying you shouldn't have instant access to cash. the usual amount stated for an emergency fund (i.e. not part of long term investments) is something like 3x your monthly salary. but even when interest rates are low, that money should be doing something. not just being locked up in a fucking box losing value.

Ammo, medicine, tobacco, lighters, ferro rods, water filters, razors, liquor, food etc will keep their value well and will be valuable for barter during SHTF. You might be able to barter with gold and silver but you are going to get skinned and you would be 10-100x better of if you just used the money to buy ammo or food now instead of gold.
But if everything bounce back gold and silver will be valuable again. If the crash ever comes it going to take a long, long time before people regain their faith in FIAT currencies and then gold and silver will be boss.
