Because unlike the Europeans, the U.S. is a soft power that doesn't have publically owned facilities (like farms) located in other countries to only help themselves.
We have private companies who outreach for the sole purpose of bringing up poorer nations so that we are able to economically align in times of need, and more importantly, align militarily in times of war or civil unrest.
Tl;dr: we take over their economies and government (when they are unfriendly to US interests) so that the people rely on us but we do this covertly so the American people don't need to know geography
