They were colonized and industrialized earlier than any state West of Georgia thanks to the gold rush, have (had) a pretty coastline, attracting tourism and what is more or less the only movie input in the world, they have a disproportionately long piece of the most important coast in the richest country in the world, and it has the only highway in the US that goes straight from Mexico to Canada so they've been helped a ton by NAFTA, moreso than any other state other than possibly Texas.
They've still managed to fuck up that enormous luck by overregulating every aspect of life and business in the state and taxing the shit out of everything to pay for their diversity, and now everyone is wondering where their jobs went, where they're going to next get a glass of water, and moving to the rest of the country to elect more politicians like the ones that fucked them up in the first place.
