Their parents pay insane amounts of money for primary education, but the education isn't the point: it's the headstart on social networks. Many of the these students will go to Harvard and Yale. Later on they find themselves actually not knowing general knowledge and facts and get BTFO by middle class kids. If you are working in a big office it's absolutely essential. Lots of programs/databases/manuals/instructions are not translated (like the Bloomberg Terminal or Capital IQ,). If it's a multinational company, you'll be exchanging e-mails with other offices, writing/reading reports in english and translating for the international execs when they come to visit. Also, if you intend to pursue a master's or doctor's, tough luck not knowing English because there's literally no good material available in other languages in a lot of fields.

You misunderstand the actual life lesson the book is teaching you. No matter what happens society will not have a merit based society because of nuclear families. That's it. Not capitalism, not socialism. Nothing but the destruction of nuclear families will solve the inherit issue. Societies have attempted to stop this before it doesn't work. You will always try to get your DNA a leg up over everyone else.
