It should be noted that legal cases in which a UK residents went to jail for injuring a criminal are rare.
The only two major cases I could think of is
1. The case where a man actually booby trapped his house and waited for the burglar to come in. That was ruled unlawful because it could have been a danger to somebody else.
2. A UK resident who shot a burglar but chased him down and shot him several more times.
99% of the time, if you defend yourself in your own home you won't go to prison unless there's serious circumstances. And the Crown isn't really interested in prosecuting people defending themselves in their own home.

Consider that concealed carry is not permitted in New York State. There are too many people living there, it's too dangerous. Imagine if 65 million people lived in an area of the USA as large as the UK. It's likely that gun laws there would be pretty severe. So this is just common sense.
CCTV is not an issue. If I were to walk from my house to the shops and some private citizen had set up cameras on each street corner to film everyone who walked by, I wouldn't mind. You have no expectation of privacy in a public place. So why would I care if the government records images in order to prevent crime?
