Actual hard-line nationalist groups are seen as something between a joke and a terrorist threat in most countries in the world - they have zero chance of achieving any political power and almost without fail end up collapsing. The 'alt-right' isn't perfect but it's a step in the right direction, and it'll introduce concepts to the public mindset which will, in turn, make them more supportive of actual nationalism.
