I was born in USSR and raised in one of the ex-USSR countries before moving here. As much as I don't like USSR as a communist empire, I have respect for the people who fought back then.
It was and it is called the Great Patriotic War not without a reason. The first Patriotic War was in 1812 against Napoleon, and Russians basically used the tactics of scorched land and also set Moscow on fire when it was time and need to do that. They used the same tactics in 1941 and were ready to burn Moscow down if they wouldn't hold it. The most of war production was moved to Siberia anyway so it was just a matter of time to get their shit together and strike back, even if the strike would start from the eastern territories and not from European part of the USSR
