Vietnam was principally the carry over of a colonial conflict; the french did not want indochina to fall to the communists, nor did they want them to become politically independent. The French lost the second indochinese war, and demanded that United States come to their help, otherwise they would leave NATO. In order to keep french interests salient, we gave them nominal support, despite our reluctance (which was partially due to our support of Ho Chi Minh fighting the Japanese occupation in WWII). In the end, the French left integrated command, and left the messy after birth of their colonial war in our lap after hastily withdrawing.
The Dutch Shell oil company also had considerable assets in the oil rich sands of the Me Kong Delta.
We also had a vested interest in testing new doctrines and weapons; which evolved considerably to meet the demands of the conflict.
In the end, after the fall of Saigon and its unification, Vietnam asserted its independence from its chinese neighbors and told the Soviet Union to fuck itself, long achieving that independence it sought for so long. An unintended consequence of all this was the Sino-Soviet split over the Vietnamese question. Less than 20 years down the road, they signed a treaty of economic cooperation and friendship, where as China and Russia are now at each other's throats.
