He's not right but he's trying his best to preserve what order left in Syria.
I'd say try to speak with some sane Syrian refugees if you can find any. Many Germans and other nationalities have visited Turkey and we have spoken with more than few Syrians on different gatherings about what happened and what's happening in their lives when Syrian civil war started, maybe you could get some better insight that way.
