It's a feelings based thing, not a factual thing. You have to understand that there are a lot of people in the world who don't think like you. You have to understand that there are a lot of people in the world who have been brought up thinking it is right doing what they feel, and that there are people who make decisions based on feelings alone.
Trump is easy to hate. He is brash, it is trendy to hate him, it will get you Facebook likes. It doesn't matter if he's never said anything truly racist. The media (online and traditional) gives the impression that he does. Hell, I'm an outsider to this and based on what I see in the media (why would I watch extensive campaign speeches anyway), he seems like kind of an asshole and its very understandable why people believe the negative things the media says about him, especially if you think with your feelings.
People are compassionate, or want to give the image of being compassionate. Trump says things like banning Muslims, and when you take it at face value "banning muslims" it doesn't sound compassionate at all, it sounds horrible. And this is where the train of thought ends. There's no research into why, what he actually meant or if he actually even said it.
You just have to hope that these sort of people are still a minority in your country. Do not give these people unnecessary attention.

It's really not that hard to see. Hating a minority group (whether its race, religion, sexual orientation) is probably the least acceptable thing to do in 21st century America. Banning entry is a strong thing and a strong image, it can easily be equated with hate and this is what the media is equating it with. And if you haven't realized, people actually listen to the media and people seek out media that fits in with the things they care about. There are people who go to Buzzfeed for their news and don't think this is questionable (same could be said about the far right and their equivalent news sources but I won't get into that).
People probably have that one neighbour/classmate/co-worker/clerk at shop who is a Muslim and they think "But they're not terrible people, they're just like you and I", which they then translate to Trump personally attacking their acquintance's right to live in America. Not to mention ISIS isn't Islam, they're crazy! They don't represent Islam because the media told me so!
