When I was in school US History ran out in WW2. There was some information about the Civil Rights era and beyond but it got more scant and glossed over the more current it was.
Textbooks for children just can't cover all this stuff and they can't be rewritten very often. College texts and actually books on history are the venue for more detailed accounts and for accounts of recent events.
