Manga started with Japanese artists drawing Disney characters and then taking it all from there which is why manga/anime characters tend to look European not Asian unless the character is specifically meant to look super Asian. It really just comes down to being easy to identify different characters. As the job creating characters is to make sure each character is distinct enough from one another to not be confused with another (as comes to one of the first rules of character design is to place each one beside another only having their outline in place and spot which character is which).
