Let's take a concrete case study.
Chicago makes it every hard to even report crimes.
Most people want a police officer to come to your house and deal with the matter at hand. That's how it happens in decent areas.
Chicago makes you report certain things online. That is very alienating and doesn't inspire confidence in the police at all. Many people simply don't fucking bother.
However, there is no hiding a corpse. Those will be dealt with every single time.
But the guy who got his car broken into? That's a burglary which he probably don't even report.

Because "gun deaths" is a loaded term.
That statistic includes suicides, justified shootings (in self-defense and such), and accidental discharges. Yet, it's thrown around as if it implies homicides.
The truth is that the statistic is massively inflated because of this, 2/3 of all "gun deaths" are suicides. With firearms being the most "successful" form of taking one's own life.

Because we have the highest gun ownership on the face of the earth. This will obviously lead to a higher number of gun-related deaths. Much like owning a car increases your chance of being in a car accident. It's just numbers.
The majority of gun-related deaths are suicide. However, we do not have nearly the highest number of suicides.
Crimes like assault and burglary are lower because criminals, like humans, have an extreme aversion to getting shot and killed. We are allowed to defend ourselves as we see fit in this country, should we feel that our lives are in danger.
Does this lead to unfortunate incidents/accidents? Yes. It's tragic, but it's the price we pay for freedom.

Bear in mind that the US is a continent-sized country. Gun deaths are a problem solely in areas with lots of dindus and immigrants, and not a problem at all in rural white areas.
But to answer your question, people here are motivated by the same things that motivate people throughout the world. Nobody decides to assault, burglarize, etc someone as a result of getting a gun. People who do that kind of thing might use a gun, but the absence or presence of a gun is not going to automatically make more people want to do that kind of thing.
