Sessions was the only senator Cruz considered a friend. Everyone else in the senate hates Cruz because he's an asshole. It's not about policy disagreements, he's just a very unlikable person. Cruz has spoken about Sessions often. To have the man who might be his only friend come out and support his opponent is crushing, not just to his campaign but also to his psyche.

He was W Bush's campaign worker in his election, and his wife was second to Condoleezza Rice during the Iraq war. And she is on a leave of absence from Goldman Sachs, instead of quitting.
