But in the US, police have a right to save their own lives first. They can shoot before someone shoots at them; they can shoot to save their lives -if they have a reasonable belief that their life is in danger. Because their job is so dangerous in the US, they can shoot first merely if they have a reasonable belief that their life is in danger. This officer I am sure did not have the experience to anticipate the threat soon enough.
Also here in the US, we know we have violent criminal elements (you might be getting your own as we speak), and we know the police are not always going to be able to protect us. Either there are too few, too far away, outgunned, or simply unpaid (Detroit, another black problem). We are our own last defense when the cops get shot. I am grateful we have our right to bear arms for our own protection.
